Pop Poem Trifecta

I wrote these poems for a writing workshop hosted by Abode Press called Writing Our Identity Through Pop Poems and Pop Music.

tic-tacs

after roll up by blackswan

Rolling up to the parking lot, rolling on ‘til I fall to the ground

like a handful of tic-tacs

Again and again, a chorus on repeat

I don’t understand how to maneuver the tic-tac under my feet

but it doesn’t have brakes. It will roll when it wants to,

regardless of how I shift my weight.

So I need to roll with it. Move with it. Keep trying ‘til I can sail on with it.

ecstasy

after cherry by bini

I need a little bit of ecstasy

I need to dance with somebody

I need to wither with somebody before the world withers on me

There’s only a little bit of summer left

and I only have enough gas money for one more trip

So please, take my hand and let me twirl you, sing with you,

toss you into the air like it’s the only thing I know how to do.

please hold

after alright by janet jackson

“I’m glad you’re alright, but I’m not

Some people don’t have it as easy

Some of us can’t fall in love with just anyone we meet — nor do we want to.

Nor do I want to.”

I stare at my response to your confession for 10 seconds

before holding my finger on backspace to wash it away.

I try again: “Thank you for expressing your vivid, lovestruck interest in me. Please give me five to ten business days to process your statement.”

Might as well start acting the robot now, beat you to the comparisons.
